FAO and AREEO establish Innovation Lab (i-Lab) to achieve innovative ‎solutions addressing the emerging issues such as climate change, water ‎scarcity and soil erosion

Innovation, particularly in agriculture, is the central driving force for achieving a hunger-free world and malnutrition with less destruction of the environment. To reach FAO-Iran’s potential capacity in addressing emerging issues such as climate change, water scarcity, and soil erosion, effective exploring of innovations and a concrete partnership with innovators are necessary. Considering the good strong technical background within the Islamic Republic of Iran, it is possible to prepare the requisite platform to utilize the vast knowledge of Iranian experts and scholars for achieving innovative solutions in the relevant sectors to FAO’s mandate.

A strong partnership with the academic sector as the birthplace of many innovations could provide great support in this regard. Thus,  FAO and Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO) have decided to establish an Innovation Lab (i-Lab) which could be a solid platform for linking FAO-Iran’s portfolio to novel solutions.

The Technology Affairs Office of AREEO will act as the focal point of the center. The iLab will be located in a well-equipped building on the SPII campus in Karaj.

AREEO focuses on the concentration of different areas of expertise in the field of Agriculture and with its leadership in creating innovative centers, has a considerable potential to contribute to the establishment of FAO Iran i-lab and to ensure the sustainability of this initiative. i-Lab is being established in order to develop the intra-organizational model of innovation at FAO-Iran and promote the culture of innovation. By identifying owners of innovative ideas, i-Lab would help to explore their potential capacities and by providing novel education, determining planning and transition of valuable expertise to startups, and finally supporting the teams would accomplish the goal of creating sustainable values.

Through communication and enabling constructive and continuous interaction between startups, the private sector, governmental agencies, academia, and research institutes, specialists, and the public, build an innovative structure and effective strategy to achieve sustainable development goals.
