Minister of Jahad- Agriculture in a meeting with people said that there are many capacities for development in the country that can be tapped by wise and robust planning. One of the potentials in this regard is IWM implementation that can provide an enabling environment for improving lands and the livelihood of land –users and local communities through the joint collaboration of government agencies, and charities through participatory mechanisms.
According to FRWO’s website, in this meeting Mahmoud Hojjati, added that there is a high capacity for the production of grains that must be utilized based on regional capacities.
For example, planting alternative crops in dry-land for water intensive crops such as alfalfa can benefit both the economy and forage shortage problem in the country. He added that we may stop alfalfa production in dry and arid provinces in the country, and replace instead the Herbaceous plant that has almost the same nutrition value, but with lower water demand with yield of approximately 7 tons per hectare in dry areas,
Hojjati also said in Mehran (located in Zagros region), which has a dry and arid climate, we have about 25,000 hectares of cultivated Lotus forests that parallel to high economic revenue, contribute a lot in combating desertification.
Minister of Jahad- Agriculture mentioned that it is true that in some parts of the country we are facing with water shortage, but we have to admit that little has been made in the field of IWM implementation. Therefore, identification and prioritization of capacities and sound management of lands in the country is essential for gaining higher productivity parallel to natural capacities.
