Two projects of management and promotion of organic matter of agricultural soils and sustainable management of dryland soils with the aim of production leap, this year was on the agenda of the Deputy Minister of Water and Soil of the Ministry of Jihad-Agriculture.
Jahanbakhsh Mirzavand told: The first step in managing and promoting soil organic matter is to identify the organic matter status of agricultural soils and plains of the country, and then identify substances that can increase soil organic matter. He said: We have various sources, such as animal manure, plant residues that can be converted into healthy compost and fertilizer, storage and return of plant residues to the soil, green manure and cultivation within crop residues in the form of conservation agriculture, to supply organic matter to agricultural soils.
Mirzavand stated: Many agricultural soils have lost their fertility due to annual cultivations and harvesting or burning of crop residues, because as a result of these actions, organic matter has not returned to the soil. Nonetheless he said that: We have dry agricultural lands in the country with good production performance, which is due to the way the farm is managed in these lands.
